TARUNMO started with a practical problem. Land degraded by desertification is easy to find and difficult to do anything with — too dry for most crops, too harsh for most plants.

JunCao grass is one of the few things that thrives there. Its root network runs roughly five metres deep, binding soil that would otherwise blow away and holding water where it lands. In field trials it has performed as both a soil stabiliser and a usable biomass feedstock.
